Fua Mulaku

Fuvammulah or Fua Mulaku is a large single island in the Maldives. It is one of the administrative divisions of the Maldives under the name Gnaviyani Atoll or Nyaviyani Atoll. The inhabitants speak a distinctive form of the Dhivehi language, known as Mulaki baha. The name of this island means "Island of the Areca nut palms", Fuvah (or "Fua") in the local language. Other places in the world like Penang in Malaysia and Guwahati in Assam, India, are also named after this nut. The original name of the island could have simply been Mulah, but was called Fuvammulah (the Mulah with the arecanut palms) to distinguish it from Boli Mulah- another important island in ancient Maldives. This island appeared in old French maps with the name Pove Molluque.
Gnaviyani Atoll is one of the administrative divisions of the Maldives. It corresponds to the one-island atoll known as Fuvammulah in the local language and Fua Mulaku in the International Navigational Charts and by H. C. P. Bell, the first person who made serious research on the Maldives. This administrative division is corresponding to the natural atoll of the same name. Surfacewise this is the smallest administrative unit in the Maldives, situated in the Equatorial Channel (Addu - Mulah Kandu) between Huvadhu Atoll and Addu Atoll. Until the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen II, Fuvammulah and Addu Atoll were considered as one Administrative division named Addumulah. Fuvahmulah is the 25th natural atoll of the Maldives. Generally people are mistaken about Fuvahmulah being a natural atoll or not. The definition of an atoll is "An island of coral that encircles a lagoon partially or completely". In the distant past Fuvammulah was a small coral atoll whose southern end was open
